Virgin Media Inc. is a British supplier of TV, phone and broadband internet services to domestic and business users in Great Britain, delivered basically through its fiber-optic wire network, located on paper in NY City with operations based in Hook, North Hampshire, UK.The company was previously known as NTL:Telewest following the fusion of NTL Incorporated with Telewest worldwide Inc.

Another merger with Virgin Mobile's UK arm in 2006 made the 1st "quadruple-play" media company in the UK, joining television, internet, mobile telephone and fixed-line phone services.While US-headquartered, Virgin Media only operates in the UK, with headquarters in Hook, Hampshire and its finance base in Bradford. The broadband division mixes NTL's cable-broadband operations (broadband Net access connections through cable), Blueyonder (Telewest's cable-broadband operations) and Virgin.net (ADSL; broadband net access through a non-cable phone line).

Virgin Broadband in wired areas is promoted as "fiber optic broadband". But it's really a FTTN network, where fiber optic trunk lines are used to attach the area's head end to cupboards on the street.The linkage between the cupboard and the client uses DOCSIS 3.0 over coaxial copper wire. Virgin Media plans to take its wire coverage to above half of grounds across Britain over the following one or two years, reaching 500k more houses.

Its 50Mb 'super-fast ' broadband should be available across its complete network before the end of 2010. And for those of you who believe 50Mb broadband is still too slow, Virgin Media started testing 200Mb broadband in May 2009 ; now that actually would be a healthy competition of all broadband, at least by UK standards.
